Vitamin D2 vs. D3: What's the Difference?

Does Your Body Use D2 and D3 Differently?

Your body can use both D2 and D3. Once absorbed, they go through processing in the liver and kidneys before vitamin D can carry out its various jobs in the body.
When healthcare providers want to know whether someone is getting enough vitamin D, they generally measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, in the blood. It's the main marker used to assess vitamin D status.
Research comparing vitamin D2 vs D3 has found that while both can raise 25(OH)D levels, D3 tends to raise them more effectively and may help maintain those levels for longer. The NIH summarizes the evidence similarly, noting that D3 may raise blood vitamin D levels higher and for longer than D2.
That doesn't mean vitamin D2 "doesn't work." It does. It simply means that when researchers compare the two, D3 generally comes out ahead for improving vitamin D status.

So, Is Vitamin D3 Better Than D2?
"Better" can be a tricky word when we're talking about nutrition.
Both forms provide vitamin D, both are absorbed by the body, and both can increase vitamin D levels. But if the goal is specifically to raise and maintain 25(OH)D levels, current evidence generally favours vitamin D3. A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the two found D3 more effective at improving vitamin D status, although the size of the difference can vary depending on factors such as dose and how the vitamin is taken.
That's a more useful way to think about the difference than simply labelling one "good" and the other "bad." Nutrition is rarely that black and white.
What About Vegan Vitamin D3?

Because traditional vitamin D3 is commonly sourced from lanolin, people following a vegan lifestyle may assume D2 is their only option.
Today, that's not necessarily the case. Lichen-derived D3 provides a non-animal source of cholecalciferol, which means people looking for plant-based or vegan-friendly supplements can now find D3 options as well.
It's a good reminder of why reading beyond the front of a supplement bottle can be helpful. Seeing "vitamin D3" tells you the form of the vitamin, but it doesn't necessarily tell you where that vitamin came from.

Does the Source Change What Vitamin D3 Does?
Once you're looking at vitamin D3 itself, the important distinction is usually the source rather than a different vitamin.

For many families, then, choosing between sources isn't about finding a completely different type of vitamin D. It's about finding a source that fits their dietary preferences, values, or lifestyle.

Do You Need to Worry About Which One You're Taking?
