Aging Benefits of Protein

Protein is the most important macronutrient; several studies have shown elderly people consume less than the daily recommended amount of protein. Inadequate protein intake is closely linked to loss of muscle strength and functionality.


Are You Getting Enough Protein?

It’s common that as we age we eat less food. Whether this is from a lack of appetite, changes to smell and taste, difficultly in eating due to denture problems, living alone, or simply losing interest in cooking. This can mean, as we age, we aren't getting enough important macro and micronutrients, despite the need for many nutrients being higher.

How Much Protein Do I Need?

The recommended protein intake for adults is 0.6 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

Many nutrition experts now recommend older people increase their protein intake compared to younger adults. Older women in particular, should increase their protein intake to a minimum of 1.0-1.2g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.

Not All Protein is Created Equal

Dietary sources of protein include meats, eggs, plants and dairy products but not all of those are created equal. To assess the quality of dietary protein three criteria can be considered: protein biological value, protein efficiency ratio, and net protein utilization.
