The 5 Best Fruits for Arthritis

According to arthritis.ca, 1 in 5 Canadians have arthritis.  There's no cure for this debilitating condition, but there are small steps you can take to help mitigate inflammation and therefore pain.  In this blog we're bringing you 5 of the best fruits you can eat for their anti-inflammatory benefits, and more.

The 5 Best Fruits for Arthritis

  • Avocado

The rich, creamy texture of avocado comes in part from its high concentration of anti-inflammatory monounsaturated fat.  Avocados are also a good source of vitamin E, which has its own anti-inflammatory effects.

We have a delicious avocado lime protein dressing recipe found here.

  • Cherries

Tart cherries get their dark red colour and many of their powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits from the flavonoid known as "anthocyanin"

  • Strawberries

Strawberries are naturally low in sugar and have more vitamin C per serving than an orange, though oranges and other citrus fruits are also great for arthritis sufferers. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that basically keeps the body functioning and plays a role in fighting inflammation linked to infection, which may trigger arthritis flares.

Strawberries are also a source of folic acid, which the arthritis medication methotrexate can diminish.

  • Raspberries

Raspberries are among the highest in vitamin C and anthocyanin (that flavanoid we mentioned earlier) not to mention low in natural sugars. Studies have shown extracts from this tasty fruit can reduce inflammation. Other research shows that the fruit lowers system-wide inflammation, too!

These sweet nubs are perfect for someone who is watching their sugar intake and could benefit from their anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Citrus fruits

Research has proven that incorporating the right amount of vitamins into your daily routine helps to prevent inflammatory arthritis and maintaining healthy joints. Citrus fruits – like oranges, grapefruits and limes – are rich in vitamin C.
