Unleash the Ashwagandha Power

Unleash the Ashwagandha Power

ayurvedic herbs including ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a prominent herb, in fact one of the most important ones, used as a natural Ayurvedic remedy against various ailments.  Ayurveda is a traditional form of alternative medicine based on Indian principles of natural healing.  It’s been used for thousands upon thousands of years to help relieve stress symptoms, improve focus and concentration, and increase energy.

The word ‘ashwagandha’ in Sanskrit means ‘smell of the horse,’ which is said to refer to both the scent of ashwagandha and its powerful ability to increase strength and energy. You may also see it labeled with its botanical name, ‘Withania Somnifera’ or ‘Indian ginseng’ and ‘winter cherry’.

Ashwagandha Benefits

Aside from the stress relief benefit, ashwagandha is a power-house of other possible benefits, these include:

  • Increased muscle strength
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced symptoms of some mental health conditions
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved memory function
  • Reduced blood sugar levels

How ashwagandha can help reduce stress and anxiety

Classified as an ‘adaptogen’ which is a substance that helps the body cope with stress, ashwagandha has been found to reduce the activity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a system in your body that regulates the stress response (1).

In addition to the HPA, ashwagandha helps to control different mediators of stress within the body, including heat shock proteins (Hsp70), stress-activated c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK-1) and cortisol.

Research (((Find link)) does suggest Ashwagandha supplements such as our Mood Boost vitamins may help relieve anxiety and stress.  In this small study with 58 participants, people who took 250mg or 600mg of ashwagandha extract for 2 months showed significantly lower stress levels and levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, compared to those who instead took a placebo.

Because those who took the ashwagandha also showed improvements in sleep quality, it suggests that the reduced level of stress allowed for better, deeper sleep.

Ashwagandha for endometriosis

Endometriosis is a disorder that impacts the reproductive system.  It causes the endometrium-like tissue growing outside of the uterus in areas like the bowel, ovaries and abdomen. Endometriosis affects up to 10% of women between the ages of 15 and 44. (2)

Despite its common occurrence, endometriosis is quite hard to diagnose. The diagnosis can only be confirmed surgically by visualization or biopsy. This is usually achieved by placing a camera into the abdomen during a procedure called a laparoscopy. The main symptom of endometriosis is pain, making it a difficult condition to diagnose because symptoms may often be vague.

Traditional treatments for endometriosis include hormone therapy, medication that blocks the production of estrogen, and pain medication.  Some herbal remedies are also associated with reducing the symptoms of endometriosis, including ashwagandha.

A 2014 review found clinically significant reductions in stress as a direct result from treatment with ashwagandha.  Prior to that, an earlier study done in 2006 also found that women with advanced endometriosis tend to have higher-than-average levels of cortisol. Both of these studies show a connection between ashwagandha and stress reduction.
